Eating Out
Jamie Oliver's 'Fifteen Cornwall'
http://www.fifteencornwall.co.uk/thefifteenrestaurant.php
We make delicious Italian inspired food. On a beach in Cornwall. With amazing ingredients. What could be better?
Each morning a small army of local farmers, fishermen and growers arrive on our doorstep with a feast of food plucked fresh from the fields and sea. Over 80% of what we serve is Cornish. Even our pasta when the season’s right.
Our doors open for breakfast every morning at 8.30am. If you’ve not tried a fry up Italian style you’re missing out! It definitely gets the day going. Lunch at Fifteen Cornwall is a favourite here. The restaurant buzzes with atmosphere and it’s a great time for families with younger children. We serve a simple three-course set menu for £28 or you can eat off our a la carte menu.
Dinner is a more intimate affair. Guests are treated to our £60 tasting menu; five courses that capture the full flavour of Cornwall’s renowned produce, served against the backdrop of a sunset over Watergate Bay. Good food can never truly be at home without good wine so Gordon, our sommelier, takes care of this with our optional wine package – a glass matched specifically to each course, for an additional £45.
Rick Stein's 'The Seafood Restaurant'
http://www.rickstein.com/The-Seafood-Restaurant.html
"I've never thought of our restaurants as temples of gastronomy, they're just places where the fish is fresh and exhilarating and the atmosphere is alive and full of fun. The way we cook and the relaxed way the staff look after you in the restaurants is our idea of what seaside holidays in a very pretty fishing port on the North Cornish coast are all about." Rick Stein
We have a seafood bar right in the middle of the restaurant where you can watch chefs assembling platters of oysters, langoustines, sushi and sashimi. No reservations are required for the bar and you can order anything from the a la carte menu.
Stein's Fish and Chips
http://www.rickstein.com/Steins-Fish-and-Chips.html
I've always wanted a fish and chip shop, somewhere you can wander in, choose you fish and wait while it cooks. We have a fish and chip shop in Padstow and in 2009 opened one in Falmouth which is my other favourite seaside town in Cornwall, situated on the south coast.
You'll find a menu of cod and haddock together with a large range of local fish like hake, monkfish, John Dory and bass in batter and deep fried in beef dripping to make it really crisp. We serve homemade chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and our mayonnaise-based tartare sauce along with some nice wines and good beer.
Things to do in the area
Mawgan Porth is a wide sandy bay on the north coast of Cornwall about half way between Newquay and Padstow. It forms the seaward end of the lovely Vale of Lanherne running into St. Mawgan and St. Columb.
The beach is flanked by high cliffs, rocks and caves with a stream winding down one side and a small waterfall on the other.
The surfing is good, with an excellent surf school, and beach guards are on duty throughout the summer.
The cliffs for several miles around are protected by the National Trust including the magnificent scenery at Bedruthan Steps just along the road among a number of other fine beaches. There are many splendid walks, a favourite being the footpath to picturesque St. Mawgan, one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall, and dating from the Middle Ages.
Mawgan Porth boasts several excellent restaurants, a well-stocked grocery shop a fish and chip shop, a cafe and pubs. There are also two farm shops - one organic.
5 miles to the north we have the ancient fishing town of Padstow with the lobster hatchery, deep sea fishing and a variety of boat trips, cycling on the Camel trail and Rick Stein’s restaurant. A ferry across the estuary, busy with boats, takes you to Rock, where there is a sailing school and golf course.
The surf mecca of Newquay is 5 miles to the southwest and offers all the facilities of a seaside town with the usual supermarkets, banks, pharmacies etc. Between us and Newquay is Watergate Bay with it's kite surfing and Jamie Oliver's 15 restaurant.
Local facilities include:- Surfing, kite surfing, go-carting, fishing, tennis, golf courses, crazy golf, horse riding, guided walks and indoor play parks within 30 minutes drive.
